Almonds are definitely among the healthiest nuts that exist. They are rich in various essential vitamins, minerals, protein, enzymes, antioxidants, flavonoids and other organic compounds that can help your body function better. Besides raw almonds, many people buy almond milk thinking it possesses the same health benefits. Almonds will provide your body with energy and nutrients, but almond milk is not as healthy as people have been led to think.
Store-bought almond milk contains a lot of sugar and additives with only traces of almonds. For example, a research on popular almond milk brands discovered that the brand Alpro contains only 2% almonds, with the rest being a mixture of sweeteners, water, carrageenan and vitamins. To get all the nutrients from the milk, you’d need to drink the whole carton. This is why it’s so low on calories – a cup of the milk has 30 calories, while a handful of nuts have 160. Almond milk costs $4 per gallon, so it isn’t exactly cheap. However, you won’t hear this from the media, as it would cut down the profit of the milk industry.
White Wave, a plant-based milk company, have seen their profits grow by 50% in 2014, and it’s expected they continue to climb every year. Besides only serving as profit for industry giants, some of the ingredients in almond milk are questionable as well. Carrageenan is a thickening agent added to almond milk which has been linked to GI tract inflammation. This is why doctors are recommending we all stop drinking almond milk as it’s nothing more than water and additives. Instead of getting the milk, eat a handful of nuts and almonds every day in their natural form.
Before eating any nuts, however, you need to soak them in water. This will remove the phytic acid from them and make them easier to digest. You can also blend 3 cups of previous soaked almonds and strain the paste through a cheesecloth. Add a bit of vanilla or cinnamon extract to the paste, transfer it to a jar and drink it for a maximum of 3 days. It’s sort of like your own homemade almond milk.
