Employees of the University of Descartes in Paris, participants of the International Cardiology Congress ESC, argue that tea reduces the risk of premature death by 24%. Such conclusions were made on the basis of seven-year studies (from 2001 to 2008).
Drinking coffee and tea is an important component of the life of a modern person. However, if you have to choose between them, scientists believe that it may be better to give preference to tea. The effect of these beverages on the cardiovascular system was studied earlier, but the results were ambiguous.
In the new study, scientists analyzed the effects of drinking coffee and tea on the risk of death from cardiovascular events and other causes among French people who had a low risk of developing these diseases. More than 130,000 volunteers aged 18-95 years took part in this study.
French scientists observed the health of these people, given the propensity to drink tea. As a result, it turned out that tea fans have a lower risk of early death compared to those who do not drink tea (or drink less than four cups a day).
Scientists explain such conclusions by the fact that usually people who lead a much healthier lifestyle have the propensity to tea drinking. For example, there are more smokers among coffee lovers than among those who like drinking tea.
Scientists also noted that the average age of coffee lovers was 44 years compared with the average age of tea-lovers – 40 years. It should be noted that participants who drink coffee had lower rates of systolic blood pressure and higher rates of diastolic one than tea lovers.
It is worth noting that men tend to drink more coffee than women, and women drink more tea than men. Scientists also noted a tendency to reduce the risk of death from cardiovascular diseases among tea lovers, but this effect was not very significant after adjusting for age, sex and the presence of bad habits (smoking) among participants.
In turn, the use of tea significantly reduces the risk of death from other causes, in general by 24%. Tea contains a significant amount of antioxidants, which have a positive effect on the state of human health. Also, scientists noted that those who drink tea tend to lead a healthier lifestyle than coffee lovers.
