Scoliosis is an common medical condition in which a person’s spine has a sideways curvature. It is detected with over 4 million patients in the U.S. Even though it is known that it is triggered by a bone abnormality at birth and traumatic injury, scientists have not been able to detect the precise source of the condition in numerous cases.
The usual treatment for scoliosis is a brace for correcting the spine, which depends on the age of the person affected with it, or surgery. Regardless of the chosen option, a lot of studies show that there is one crucial part of the treatment for this condition, and that is exercise. The grandmother we are going to talk about decided to deal with this condition on her own terms and was cured of her curved spine, which was considered a total miracle.
An 86-year-old Grandmother Treats Scoliosis By Practicing Yoga
Anna Pesce had a back condition for a certain period of time, but she turned eighty-six years old she was forced to use a wheelchair. However, her health got in the worst condition when she went to visit her family in 2014 in Wagener, SC. She started feeling severe pain in her back, and she was in pain throughout the entire trip rather than enjoying the time spent with her loved ones.
“I was feeling a dreadful pain in my back”, Pesce says. “They had to carry me up the stairs and put me in a wheelchair for my entire stay there.”
Even though the condition was developing gradually, it finally overtook the New York grandmother. However, she didn’t want to accept that this painful condition was going to be her fate.
“There isn’t anything I didn’t try: a physiotherapist, acupuncture and visiting a chiropractor,” she says. “I used to feel good for a short period of time, however, I was in severe pain again shortly after that.”
At that period of time, the daughter of Anna Pesce had an idea on how to relieve the pain that her mother was feeling, and took her to meet Rachel Jesian, who is a certified yoga instructor and a back professional. They began by working on corrective postures and stretches. Pace was really enjoying this process and was giving her best
After one month had passed, she could walk again.
“After two months had passed, the other great achievement was that Anna was able to distinguish which position she was supposed to do in order to relieve some pains she usually felt,” Jesien explains. “For example, whenever she felt pain in her hips, she sat on a chair and did an ankle-to-knee posture.”
Rachel Jesien was having her own problems with scoliosis and that is how she discovered back-restoration yoga. She went to see a message therapist who was the one who proposed this method to her following a number of ineffective treatments.
“I was forced to wear a brace for my back for five years and I had physical therapy on a weekly basis, but this proved to be the only thing that worked for me,” Jesien says.
From the beginning of this journey of Pesce and Jesien, a number of miracles occurred.
“I feel wonderful now because I can drive the car by myself and I can do the stuff I couldn’t do in the past,” says Pesce. “I recommend this method to everyone having similar problems.”
The Power That Yoga Has
Many studies have proven the remarkable results that yoga has on the wellbeing of a person. It has been proved that yoga prevents/heals:
- High blood pressure
- Coronary heart disease
- Weakness in the muscles
- Diabetes type 2
- Cardiovascular disease
- Insomnia or lack of sleep
The story of Anna Pesce shows that yoga can also help the treatment of scoliosis.
It’s high time that physicians start offering yoga mats whenever a patient comes complaining from a chronic condition, rather than offering him or her medicines or treatments that might never actually result in success.
